With an evocative title and assumed polysemy, Jacques Lenot's 'Propos recueillis' forms a cycle of twelve pieces for an instrumental ensemble of twelve musicians.

The composer proposes an attempt at transcription and orchestration of a booklet of lieder for alto voice and piano, three pieces for piano, and another booklet for violin and piano.

Often dark and exalted poems by Else Lasker-Schüler, a prominent figure of early 20th-century German expressionism, have inspired the majority of the pieces, as well as those of Hölderlin and Faulkner. Each 'Propos,' like a song without words, develops a universe of great interiority and strong concentration, through the composer's precise writing.

Sturm und Klang, which ensured the creation of the cycle, is happy and proud to present you with this recording, with this historical nod: Else Lasker-Schüler was closely associated with the Berlin magazine 'Der Sturm,' as evidenced by the title page of the magazine, where Franz Marc drew inspiration for this woodcut from the poet's poem 'Versöhnung'.

Reviews

"The 'Propos recueillis' by Jacques Lenot form a cycle of twelve pieces for an instrumental ensemble of twelve musicians.

The composer proposes an attempt at transcription and orchestration of a booklet of lieder for voice and piano, three pieces for piano, and another booklet for violin and piano.

The pieces are inspired by the expressive and enigmatic poetry of Else Lasker-Schüler, a prominent figure of early 20th-century German expressionism."

5 étoiles de Classica Magazine - Review by Romaric Gergorin in the June issue

"A vibrant meditation on time where the instruments, both autonomous and complementary, evolve in an eminently colorful and shifting space... Each piece is inscribed in a singular temporality and a unique instrumental configuration... The color palette is sumptuous and the execution very meticulous from the Sturm und Klang ensemble, shaping the singular spatio-temporal framework where Jacques Lenot's music is revealed to us and acquires its emotional power."

Resmusica - Michèle Tosi, May 2, 2022

"We find the author's complex writing, close to the abstraction of language, through short pieces, fragments, or more developed phrases colliding with each other. Generating unexpected sounds: the strident character of the strings, strange interjections from the winds. This also produces 'a music of space and light whose unfolding has an imperturbable, inexorable aspect."
